Site Upgrades

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Hey everyone! This is Ling dropping in to let you know that the site has been upgraded and is now operating smoothly (mostly). I’ve also implemented some design changes for a fresh new look. If you really liked one of the old layout color schemes, never fear—all of them have been upgraded so you can continue to browse WR.org with your favorite colors.

The site is still slightly under construction, but should be completely functioning very soon. If anyone notices any problems with the site’s operation, please let me know via e-mail. I’ll get back to you on it ASAP.

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Tell your congress person you don’t want to hear your local news from one source. Exercise your right to free speech and stand together. It takes 2 minutes to send a message to your congress person, just enter your name and location so it goes to the right person. You don’t have to write anything yourself, there is a form letter you can send. So what are you waiting for? Go to stopbigmedia.com/potterwatch now!

While there check out and download for free the Rocking Out Against VoldeMedia album to show your support. It’s quick and simple but you have to do it as soon as possible if you want to prevent the media from becoming a VoldeMedia by December 18th. That’s tomorrow folks.

CafePress Charity Sale EXTENDED Through 2007!

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

October 1st was supposed to be the end of WizardRock.Org’s double fundraiser, but due to low profits (thanks to CafePress’ stingy commissions rates), I’ve decided to extend the fundraiser through December 31st!
That’s right! To kick off 2008 in a positive way, all proceeds made from the WizardRock.Org CafePress shop (between August, when we began this fundraiser, and December 31st) will then be collected and divided evenly between The Harry Potter Alliance (intended to be donated to social justice-related causes and organizations and/or contribute towards funding for future wizard rock and/or HPA-related events) and The Remus Lupins (in an attempt to help them replace the $2,000 and two iPods that they lost this August, when thier tour van was burglarized).

If you want to pitch in for this fundraiser, make a purchase at WizardRock.Org’s CafePress shop anytime between now and New Year’s Day! Rock for a cause! :D

NOTE: If none of the shop’s designs fit your taste, feel free to e-mail ashe@sodapopink.com with some design suggestions, and I will see what I can conjure up for you by the end of the year. However, please STOP suggesting the use of lyrics from existing wizard rock bands’ songs; that constitutes copyright infringement, and WizardRock.Org will NOT sell anything that competes with or can be confused with “official” band merchandise. Thanks!

Police Brutality in Providance

Monday, August 13th, 2007

The best way for you to read this is straight from Whompy:

Hate to rain on the Potter parade, but I have some more horrible news to relay. Alex Svoboda, an acquaitance of mine from Providence RI, participated in a protest for worker’s rights in North Providence on Saturday 8/11. The march included 30 to 40 people, and was aimed at confronting a restaurant chain that receives goods from a supplier that is notorious for slave labor conditions and 110-hour work weeks (HWH, based in NYC). The local police quickly worked to contain the march. Initially the protesters kept marching, ignoring the cops’ insistence that they move to the sidewalks. However, they eventually started to move toward the sidewalks, just as the cops exited their cars and began to move toward the protestors on foot. The police officers resorted to violence immediately, rather than making an attempt at mediation. In the process, my friend Alex was pinned to the ground, and sustained a broken and dislocated leg and a ruptured blood vessel. She’s currently in the hospital and needs multiple surgeries. The kicker is that she has no health insurance. On top of that, the cops are CHARGING HER with THREE felony counts of assaulting a police officer, as well as two additional misdemeanors. As she will need to undergo extensive rehab before she can begin working again, she clearly needs a lot of help covering legal and medical costs (both of which will be overwhelming given all relevant factors).

PLEASE: If you can help with a donation of any size.. 25 cents, 25 dollars, 250 dollars, whatever — send a payment via paypal to thewhompingwillows@yahoo.com and I will relay the donations to the proper place. Please try to include a note with your payment that says “For Alex Svoboda” or something like that. THANK YOU!!!

Love and solidarity,
Matt
